Editorial
The purpose of this journal is to bring the best work in philosophy to bear on pressing issues of public, political or interdisciplinary interest and to disseminate it to a broad, global audience comprised of both academic and non-academic readers, with high impact. To this end, we have developed a debate format for two forthcoming special issues. These two issues will focus on the topic of manipulation.
Debates concerning what manipulation is, as well as the normative status of manipulation, have seen renewed interest in recent years. Just last year, and within months of each other, two book-length accounts of manipulation and its normative status were published: Robert Noggle’s Manipulation: Its Nature, Mechanisms, and Moral Status, and Shlomo Cohen’s The Concept and Ethics of Manipulation.
The first issue, scheduled for publication in September 2026, comprises four articles by these two authors. Each author introduces their view, and each responds to the other’s view. The next issue (March 2027) will include articles by four different authors commenting on the exchange in this issue. We hope these two issues can serve as a resource for readers of all types to get up to date on two new, robustly developed views on this highly relevant topic, as well as a reflection of the broader contemporary debate on manipulation.
