Amitpal is a DPhil student in Philosophy working in moral, political, and legal philosophy, as well as private law theory. Amitpal's DPhil project examines how immorality distorts or disables the obligations ordinarily generated by normative practices such as promising, requesting, and commanding, with particular attention to the implications of these moral inquiries for legal doctrine—including the doctrine of illegality in contract law and the criminal law of conspiracy and solicitation.
Amitpal's project is supervised by Professor David Owens and is funded by an Oxford Uehiro Institute DPhil Scholarship. Amitpal holds a B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto, a J.D. from the University of Toronto, and an LL.M. from the Yale Law School. Before graduate school, Amitpal practiced commercial litigation in New York City and clerked for the Hon. Justice John J.L. Hunter at the Court of Appeal for British Columbia.
