Spencer is a DPhil student in Philosophy. His research interests span the philosophy and ethics of AI, the philosophy of mind, and animal ethics. He is particularly interested in cognition in large language models, AI alignment, AI welfare and moral status (whether perceived or real), and invertebrate minds and ethics. His DPhil is funded by a Uehiro Oxford Institute DPhil Scholarship and supervised by Dr Raphaël Millière and Professor Roger Crisp.
Spencer previously received an MPhil in History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge, which was funded by Longview Philanthropy’s Digital Sentience Career Transition Fellowship. Before that, he completed a BSc in Philosophy at the London School of Economics, where he also worked as a Research Assistant at the Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience.
