Elad Uzan is an honorary Research Associate at the Uehiro Oxford Institute, University of Oxford, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate students, including on the MSt in Practical Ethics. His research spans moral, political, and legal philosophy, with particular interests in the ethics of harming, war and self-defense, and the ethics of artificial intelligence.
His forthcoming book, The Morality and Law of Ending War (Oxford University Press, 2027), develops the first systematic moral and legal account of when and how wars should end. It examines how a war that was initially justified may become impermissible to continue as its humanitarian costs rise, its aims change, or its prospects of success diminish.
His current project, Moral Mathematics, examines how mathematical methods can be used to analyze moral problems involving harm, moral constraints on action, and uncertainty, and to evaluate moral reasoning in artificial intelligence. At Uehiro, he is involved in the AI Research Ethics Decision-Aid Project (AIREDA), which aims to develop practical tools to support ethical decision-making in AI research, particularly in relation to model release, dual-use technologies, and the risks associated with uncertainty.
Previously, Uzan was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow in Oxford’s Faculty of Philosophy, a Junior Research Fellow in Philosophy at Corpus Christi College, and a Departmental Lecturer at Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School and a fellow at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study, where he began developing his work on Moral Mathematics. He is a recipient of the American Philosophical Association’s Baumgardt Memorial Fellowship.
