Rei is a DPhil student in Philosophy. He works broadly in moral, political, and legal philosophy. His doctoral research focuses on the well-being of groups, prudential normativity, and moral metaphysics. He is particularly interested in whether group entities—such as states and corporations—can have well-being on their own that is not reducible to the well-being of their individual members, and in the theoretical and practical implications of this view. Rei’s project is supervised by Professor Roger Crisp.
Before starting the DPhil, Rei studied at the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics as a Recognized Student (2023–2024). Prior to Oxford, Rei received an MA in Law from the University of Tokyo and a BA in Political Science from Waseda University.
